Just Like A Boy

The day was filled with sunshine, bird songs and an occasional left over mud puddle as we walked along our mountain road.   The boys investigated rotting logs, dirt piles and gave one another brotherly nudges now and then as we made our way to the big creek.  Mac dragged his shovel along following tire paths in the dirt road.

We passed our neighbor's place, the horse breeder, and wondered  "where are the horses?".  Apparently, they were up the hill in the open pasture.  Suddenly a stallion darted from the barn startling the lot of us into a giggling frenzy.  I love the sound of my boys' laughter.  It makes me giddy and goose bumpy....the happiest sound in the world.  Across the way the flowers were blooming and bees buzzing as we enjoyed the sight and aroma of flaming fuchsia .  Dandelions were discovered, and we blew a few resulting in further delay of reaching our destination.  With tickling noses we continued our trek to the big creek...slowly but surely...because it truly is about the journey...not the destination.

Boys, rubber boots, mud, rocks, the big creek...a dream afternoon in spring.  Laughter together with splashing slurping sloshing galumphing noises clearly revealed we were having a blast. After playing in the creek there was the pouring of water from boots...by both removal of boots and dumping as well as lying down and holding booted-feet over our heads.  The latter resulted in much more fun and laughter.

As the sun slowly lowered behind the mountaintop we began our meander homeward...running...strolling...kicking stones...holding hands...talking.   One of those afternoons with my boys that I never want to forget.  Perfect in every way.  Overtaken by the warm fuzzies, I began to wonder if the boys were having any warm fuzzies of their own.  Then I heard...

"Ah man, I got a booger between my teeth."

Isn't it just like a boy to add that little something special to ensure the afternoon is never forgotten?
