six days ago our sixteen year old son

returned home

from residential psychiatric treatment

again

two days ago his father and i called 911

and our son was arrested

today we formally file felony charges

and

for the safety of our younger sons

hope that

our son

will never return to his family

how does a mother crawl up from

the grave of this death

start living the life I've imagined

worry less and enjoy more

 You see, it's this way,

when you are the mother of a child who lives with mental illness

for whom it is nearly impossible to control himself

you often envision him

on the streets

homeless

eating a pack of Lance crackers

and a can of cold beans

(if he were able to safely steal them)

sleeping in an abandoned railroad depot

shivering in a corner

while that last little part of his heart

dies

with yours

 ❧

we have to stop the stigma of mental illness

because my child's life

and others'

depend upon a society that understands

mental illness is not a choice

Everything stressful, negative and disheartening in life is

totally negated by moments like the one pictured above.

Even though at times I cower in a corner of my bedroom...I do love life.

Life is far more good than not, and

when rain falls, a cleansing aroma of renewal refreshes the soul.
