Honestly, about this book review...I had a difficult time writing it. The difficulty has nothing to do with the book itself. The book is beautifully written entwining the Biblical story of Mary and Martha and a guide for today's woman in choosing "the better part". The difficulty lies completely within me.
I have been a Christian since childhood, but my relationship with God has gone the way of many of today's marriages...letting routine busyness take the place of intimacy. Joanna's book has broken my heart, and it has sparked a passion for regaining my intimacy with Christ. Joanna speaks about the process of writing Having A Mary Heart in a Martha World much as I felt about the process of reading it...
It hasn't been a comfortable process. To be truthful, I would have preferred a trip to a heavenly day spa. A twenty-four hour makeover complete with body wrap, face-lift, and a new spiritual wardrobe. But God decided to do it the old-fashioned way. He decided to use life to teach me. He decided to use the process of writing this book.
Reading this book was an uncomfortable process for me (bring on the spa trip, puhleese), but it was a true blessing. Joanna's eloquent writing is based not only in Biblical truth, but also in her heart. I will be rereading Having A Mary Heart in a Martha World and using the study guide provided as an appendix because, borrowing a phrase from another Martha, "it's a good thing".
